Choosing the right location for your family photography session can make all the difference. Auckland is one of the most beautiful places to photograph families, with beaches, parks, native greenery, dramatic coastlines and beautiful light all within easy reach.
As a portrait and family photographer in Auckland, I don't believe there is one perfect location for every family. The best location is the one that feels like you.
Some families love running barefoot on the beach. Others prefer a quiet park, a walk through the trees, or the comfort of their own home. My job is to help you choose somewhere that gives your family room to move, play, laugh and simply be together.
Muriwai Beach
Muriwai is one of my favourite options for families who love a little adventure.
The wide black-sand beach, dramatic coastline and beautiful open spaces create a wonderful sense of freedom in photographs. There is plenty of room for children to run, explore and play, which means we can capture natural moments rather than asking everyone to stand still and smile.
The light around the coast can also be beautiful, particularly later in the day.
Muriwai works especially well for families who want their photographs to feel relaxed, outdoorsy and connected to the landscape.
Takapuna Beach
If you want a beach session without travelling too far from central Auckland, Takapuna is a beautiful option.
The beach gives us a mixture of open sand, water, rocks and interesting textures, while the surrounding area makes it easy to create variety within one session.
It is a lovely choice for families with young children because there is plenty of opportunity for movement. We can walk, play, explore the shoreline and let the children be themselves.
Mission Bay
Mission Bay is another great Auckland option, particularly if you love the idea of photographs that combine the beach with an urban Auckland feeling.
The waterfront gives us beautiful views and open space, while the surrounding streets and trees can provide a completely different look.
It can work particularly well for couples and families who want a session that feels connected to Auckland rather than purely like a beach shoot.
Cornwall Park
For families who love greenery, Cornwall Park gives us a completely different atmosphere.
The mature trees, open grass, pathways and beautiful natural surroundings create a timeless setting for family photography.
It is particularly lovely in the softer evening light, when the sun comes through the trees and everything feels a little more magical.
The best part is that we don't have to make the photographs feel formal. We can walk, explore, sit together, play with the children and let the story unfold naturally.
A Favourite Family Park
Sometimes the best location isn't one of the famous Auckland photography spots.
It might be the park you visit every weekend.
The place where your children learned to ride their bikes.
The beach where you spend summer afternoons.
Or the reserve around the corner from your home.
These places can have more meaning than any "perfect" photography location because they are already part of your family's story.
Your Own Home
An in-home family session can be incredibly special.
There is something beautiful about photographing your family exactly where your everyday life happens. Your children can play with their favourite toys, climb onto the couch, cuddle in your bed or simply be themselves.
Home sessions are particularly wonderful for families with newborns or very young children, but they can be beautiful at any stage.
You don't need a perfectly styled home. You don't need everything to be spotless.
I am interested in you, not whether your cushions are perfectly arranged.
What Makes a Location Right for Your Family?
When we plan your session, I think about more than just how a location looks in photographs.
I consider your children's ages, their personalities, what they enjoy doing, the time of day, the light, the season and the kind of photographs you want to create.
My approach is relaxed and gently guided. I don't want you spending your session worrying about where to stand or whether everyone is looking at the camera.
Instead, we'll create space for the little things that make your family yours - the cuddles, the laughter, the running, the quiet moments and all those wonderfully imperfect in-between moments.
