If you want photos that feel like an adventure, Auckland's west coast beaches are hard to beat. Piha, Muriwai and Bethells (Te Henga) all share that same dramatic, black-sand, big-sky character. Rugged cliffs, wild surf, and a kind of raw beauty you just don't get on the calmer eastern beaches.
Each has its own personality. Piha has Lion Rock as an unmistakable backdrop and a real sense of scale. Muriwai gives you the added bonus of the gannet colony on the headland if you want to build in a short walk with older kids. Bethells feels the most secluded of the three. Dunes, a lagoon, and fewer people, which is lovely if your family prefers a quieter session.
Because the west coast can be genuinely wild with strong winds, big surf, and currents that are dangerous for swimming - these sessions are built around being near the water and the dramatic landscape rather than in it. That's honestly where the best photos come from anyway: kids chasing the tideline, hair blown sideways, that huge open sky doing most of the work.
Golden hour is non-negotiable out west. The black sand and cliffs catch the last light in a way that's hard to replicate anywhere else in Auckland. I'd always plan a west coast session for a couple of hours before sunset, and keep an eye on the tide and swell forecast beforehand, since conditions change fast.
